Before attending an interview, do as much research as you can about the company with which you are meeting. The companies web site is the best place to start. Get hold of a copy of the full job description well before the interview and if possible try to visit the location before the day of the interview. Take all relevant documentation: EG. certificates, references, driving licence, etc.
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
It's impossible to prepare for every interview question, but a number of common questions tend to crop up at most interviews.
What do you know about the company?
Why do you want the job? / Why do you want to work for the company? / What can you offer to the company?
Where do you see yourself in 1 year / 5 years / 10 years time?
What are your Strengths / Weaknesses / Successes / Failures / Achievements?
Why do you want to leave your present job?
TESTING
Expect some form of testing as this is commonplace at most interviews - testing may take many forms. EG. psychometric, aptitude / skill testing (practical or written), or just basic numeracy and literacy tests. There are no right or wrong answers with psychometric tests, so just relax and answer honestly.
OTHER TIPS
When attending interviews always arrive early - it shows commitment. By waiting in reception you can observe, learn and add some finishing touches to your company knowledge. A business suit is a must, remember first impressions last, so make a point of exchanging courtesies both on arrival and when leaving.
Don’t go on about the shortcomings of your last company - be professional and try not to interrupt the interviewer but equally don’t limit yourself to just yes or no answers. Listening is just as important as talking at an interview. Be switched on and focused and if you don’t understand something don’t be afraid to ask.
Be confident, relax and enjoy the experience. Be determined and decisive during interviews (but not arrogant) and if the vacancy, company and job meets your requirements then make it clear to the interviewer that you want the position.
